Quite few interesting space propulsion technologies are being actively researched: Linear Aerospike Engine and the Ion propulsion on the new European SMART 1 lunar craft. Frankly speaking, from a geek looks standpoint the ion propulsion is really cool- great sounding name and its got an alien blue coloured exhauste to boot.

James Gosling speaks about The Business of Technology in RED HERRING and how the social aspect is still left out. (Gosling is the inventor of Java, Unix Emacs and many, many other things which are cool). Afterthought: The new owners iof Red Herring are doing a good job.
