ACM Queue | IM, Not IP (Information Pollution) - A steady dose of realtime interruptions is toxic to anyone’s health.

This is a very relevant topic considering that I have resorted to running a firewall and anti-popup browser (Mozilla Firebird) apart from the compulsory anti-virus to stop being deluged by pop-ups, pop-unders. Right now my firewall is reporting every 2 minutes that it has blocked an illegal access. Inspite of all this there seems to be end in sight to the problem of spam.
I however disagree with the authors’ take on productivity loss due to Instant Messaging - in fact corporate IM is a killer app.

I also want to apologize for my decrease in blog-activity for the past few days. My cable internet connection at home is going on and off the past few days.

ScienceDaily | Researchers Develop Nanoscale Fibers That Are Thinner Than The Wavelengths Of Light They Carry

Researchers have developed a process to create wires only 50 nanometers. The smaller fibers will allow devices to transmit more information while using less space and thus have immediate applications in nano-technology.

Apparently the scientist is an excellent teacher and so this article mentions: One researcher I met at a Physics Frontiers center was able to successfully transition from plasma physics graduate research in Mazur’s lab to a post-doctoral project on experimental neuroscience….. What good is a scientific breakthrough if one cannot convince the public, let alone another scientist of its value?

ScienceDaily | Regenerative Chemical Turns Muscle Cells Into Stem Cells

The much hue and cry over the ethics of using embryonic stem cells may come to an end. This research maybe the seed for humans to acquire the legendary regenerative capacity of the starfish or the salamander. It may sound outlandish but remember that 100 years back human flight seemed the same.

Takeo Igarashi’s research project to make a user-friendly and lightweight 3D modelling and character generation software. This really small (1.5MB) java application reminds me of the open-source Blender project (Blender development site).
