The reason why rural communities around the world are not able to enjoy the benefits of the Internet is not the feasibilty of telecommunications but rather electricity. I want to ask the Internet community is there a way to provide affordable electricity to rural communities. Remember most such places don’t have enough water/wind for hydro/wind power. I am thinking in term of bio-gas/biomass electricity generation.

Read this very thought-provoking article at Wired on how instant messanging is helping bridge the communications gap in Iraq. The people there use it widely as an affordable alternative to expensive and often unavailable telecom network.
An interesting sideline: My friend’s uncle (an economist with the World Bank) told me that how international long-distance calls in Kampala (the capital of Uganda, Africa) is much more expensive than in the remote villages. The remote villages are connected to the world by Voice over IP whereas the capital has to make do with standard telephone lines.

Infoworld is going ga-ga over the new IBM fab facility . (Fab is an acronymized version of fabrication plant). This facility has instantly put IBM into one of the world’s top semiconductor manufacturing companies. (I recently posted a news about AMD and IBM collaborating on design and manufacture of the next generation of microprocessors).

Infoworld has this interesting article on the challenges facing Intel. Intel reckons that they often have to fight it out with their biggest customers who often have similar products and design teams in house.
